In fact littering is so low on the scale of anti-social behaviour that we have found the lamest, most benign word to describe its perpetrator: This irritatingly cutesy sounding moniker is what we have bestowed upon someone who is basically a scourge to society.
When I hear the word litterbug I envision a cuddly-wuddly, fuzzy-wuzzy, harmless little animal, possibly with more than four equally adorable limbs, and something that my little niece can curl up with in bed and fall happily asleep next to.
I know what the person did and I am very clear on the quality of scumbag that I am dealing with.
We don't say rapeybug do we? And if you call someone a rapist they will, in all likelihood, feel shame, self-hatred or at the very least get pissed off. When you call someone a litterbug, the number of damns they give is zero. The word litterbug has no gravitas and all it serves to do is diminish the seriousness of the crime.
It makes littering sound less like an offense and more like an irritation, like a mild case of herpes or something. But if he did the same thing in a park or on the street then all of a sudden, litterbug is the term. This aside, the part I really can't wrap my mind around is how these litterers don't see this as a crime against themselves.
They are making a mess of public space that belongs to them and their families.
If these despicable jackasses were actually rapists they would essentially be raping themselves and the people they love! What could be worse than this and how do they not see it as such? We should probably call them litterbuggers.
Because that is what they are doing -buggering everything up. The only way to end this is to mete out severe punishment. To free up our police let's take them off helmet and seatbelt duty because you know what, let whoever doesn't want to wear a helmet or seatbelt die. To be fair, that is their problem and they are not bothering me in any way.
